With a new digital single release, The Hawk Moth, classical/folk crossover specialists Mishaped Pearls have, yet again, proven their remarkable versatility. With this release it’s clear that in addition to the ethereal splendour of their 2014 album, Thamesis, they’re just as happy to create a rousing and thoroughly delightful folk-rock stomp.
Mezzo soprano Manuela Schuette proves there’s far more to her voice than her classical training, in a beautifully earthy yet regal vocal for a modern ballad of French musical adventures. With the vocal set above the Eastern Mediterranean charm of Tom Finigan’s saz baglama, Ged Flood’s tenor guitar and flavours of bluegrass in Laurel Pardue’s dancing fiddle; the song is lifted yet further by the irresistible pace of Calie Hough’s percussion.
Recorded live in the studio at the start of this year, The Hawk Moth is a fantastic release for the height of summer – loaded with cheeky wee stops, joyful vocals from the whole band, and an incredible, infectious sense of fun. Mishaped Pearls have a number of live dates of the next month, including Priddy Folk Festival this weekend.
