Our Song of the Day comes via Irish singer-songwriter Brigid Mae Power with It’s Clearing Now, taken from her self-titled debut released on Tompkins Square Label last month. If you knew no better, you’d swear this was another long-forgotten intimate gem from the folk fringe which label owner Josh Rosenthal had un-earthed during a crate-digging venture. Whilst Tompkins Square are well known for unearthing such treasures and re-introducing them to the world they also brought us the likes of Ryley Walker – with whom Power has supported on tour. She’s also supported the likes of Alasdair Roberts and Newcastle maverick Richard Dawson. This was recorded only last year at Peter Broderick‘s home studio in Portland.
The self-titled debut is a wonderful showcase of Power’s ability to create that strong sense of intimacy that stops you in your tracks. Whilst Broderick clearly helped create that magic and bring Power’s voice to the fore, something she was keen to achieve in a studio setting, as the video below shows, she’s just as capable at working her magic when recording herself at home on a broken iPhone. This is a beautiful rendition of As I Roved Out, a traditional song in which Power carries that same power that brings a song alive…just as Andy Irvine did all those years ago…
