As part of the 2015 Anniversaries: Parliament in the Making programme, The House of Commons found that they needed to add some music into the mix of commemorative events they were commissioning. Folk by the Oak and the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) seized the opportunity and commissioned 4 incredible singer songwriters – Martyn Joseph, Nancy Kerr, Sam Carter and Maz O’Connor to write new and original songs which evoke key moments during our country’s 800 year journey towards Parliamentary democracy. Inspiration was rich and abundant, from a private tour of newly commissioned artwork in Westminster Hall to an invitation to view the breath-taking ‘Acts Room’ in the Parliamentary archives. Specific interests were sparked, family connections discovered and heroic people uncovered, leading to this collection of outstanding songs often with subject matter still relevant today. To enrich and enliven the newly created songs, Pasty Reid (formerly of Breabach) and Nick Cooke (Mawkin, Kate Rusby Band) joined the songwriters at a residency in Cambridge. This was swiftly followed by a highly acclaimed UK tour, having previously launched the project at a special concert in the Speakers House in Parliament with the sun setting
Sweet Liberties was supported by the Houses of Parliament and by PRS for Music Foundation.
Also joining Sweet Liberties at Folk by the Oak are Afro Celt Sound System, Lau, Cara Dillon and Friends, False Lights, Martin Simpson & Dom Flemons and Emily Portman & The Coracle Band.
Folk By The Oak is held at Hatfield House, Herts on Sunday 24 July 2016
