Rachel Newton’s Here’s My Heart Come Take It was a featured album of the month recently on Folk Radio UK. You can now watch a behind-the-scenes short film on the making of her third, and most challenging, solo album, one that I know I’m not alone in calling her best to date.
With this album it wasn’t just the end result that made it so fascinating, it was also the journey and challenge she personally undertook in order to create something different from her previous releases. Rather than enter the studio with pre-defined ideas she decided to go with an open-mind in the hope that she could tap into some of her best ideas, experience had taught her that these were often ‘of the moment.’ Whilst this was a daring and courageous move it did result in an incredibly honest recording…as she says, it was “from the heart”.
As well as examining this new personal approach to creation and recording the short film also highlights the role fiddler Lauren MacColl played alongside that of drummer/producer Mattie Foulds. Both players (and producer) know Rachel well and the film highlights how important this is when trying to interpret what Rachel wanted to achieve. It’s a fascinating film, one that really highlights the guts and energy that was poured into this release.
It’s testament to Rachel’s ingenuity and her understanding of British folk music, from several regions, that she can envisage, arrange and record an album as impressive as this. Neil McFadyen (read the full review)
With the number of projects Rachel’s involved in (including Emily Portman Trio, The Shee, Boreas and The Furrow Collective) we were pretty amazed that she found the time to dedicate to this album, yet she not only managed to find the time, she created a completely one-of-a-kind album.
So what’s in store next? Well, she did share with us that she will definitely be out and about next year doing some live shows with a bigger band to re-create the album sound…so watch this space as that’s one you won’t want to miss.
Here’s My Heart Come Take It is out now.
