Cass McCombs is set to make his Anti- records debut with Mangy Love on August 26th. According to Anti- this is McCombs at his most blunt “tackling sociopolitical issues through his uniquely cracked lens of lyrical wit and singular insight.”
He’s certainly far from predictable in his output although he found a fellow spirit in the form of legendary folk outsider Michael Hurley when they released a split 7″ back in 2013 of Cass’ previously unreleased Three Men Sitting On A Hollow Log and Hurley contributed a previously unreleased solo version of his song, Mabel Green. More recently he’s been sharing his love of the Grateful Dead on a tribute album curated by Aaron & Bryce Dessner of The National.
If there is a theme to his latest offering it is one of ‘opposition’ – most directly articulated in “Opposite House”, with allusions to mental illness (listen above).
The album features contributions from Angel Olsen and Blake Mills and was produced by Rob Schnapf and Dan Horne. It was mostly written during a bitter New York City winter and while traveling in Ireland. He is currently touring and makes two London appearances in June including Field Day (12 June) and The Lexington (13 June).
