Bay area based Americana duo Misner & Smith share their new video for Next Time Around. The video captures the intimacy of Misner & Smith’s live performance, and the delicate friction and balance of their vocal harmonies. In the same tradition of many of their biggest influences: Crosby, Stills & Nash, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, and Simon & Garfunkel, the melody and harmony are inseparable, and together they express the deeper, subconscious meaning and emotions of the song. The video was shot by Pint of Soul. Josh Yenne accompanies the duo on guitar.
Sam Misner: “I’d always wanted to write a non-denominational gospel song. There was a particular house concert we played while on tour that had a profound impact on us, and I think that experience is what finally brought it out. One of the hosts of the show was terminally ill, and right up until we were set to play there was a chance that the concert might need to be cancelled. But in spite of his health he and his family wanted to gather people together and fill their house with love and music, just to celebrate life. The house was packed, and we sang and played while he sat close with his family, surrounded by friends and family. An evening that could have been filled with sadness was lifted high above it with music and community. It was such a special honor to have been a part of it.”
Megan Smith: “Everyone was happy, people were laughing, in a lot of ways it was just another wonderful house concert. Three weeks later we received an email from the daughter of our hosts letting us know that her father has passed away not long after we’d played the show, and how much that night meant to everyone, her father most of all. Next Time Around is really about the power of people coming together to lift each other out of the weight of grief. It’s such a gift to sing this song. We often close our shows with it and the audience is always singing and clapping along by the end.”
