We have the great pleasure in premiering the new video for ‘Cormorant‘ from Dana Falconberry and Medicine Bow. The song is taken from her new album ‘From the Forest Came the Fire’, set for an April 2016 release via BB*ISLAND for Europe/UK (and Modern Outsider for the US). “I couldn’t breathe below the deep sea, but it does breathe underneath me”, sings Dana Falconberry on the song ‘Cormorant’. The cormorant is unique among bird species for its ability to dive up to 45 meters underwater, where it explores the alien terrain hidden beneath the ocean’s surface.
Of this video she says:
“I have always loved cormorants and marvelled at their relationship to water. I write a lot about birds and, strangely, I seem to have magical encounters with them after I write about them. Recently, a couple of years after I wrote this song, I was in California and walked out to the ocean. I found a spot where the rocks led far out into the water and I followed them. About halfway out, I looked up and saw a Cormorant further out, looking at me. I scrambled toward him and he led me further and further into the rocks, towards the water. He looked back at me every few minutes to see if I was still there. Probably he was terrified and hoped his predator would leave him, but I prefer to think he was telling me to follow! He was injured, and limped along the rocks until he came to a perch on the farthest rock. There was a place for me to sit next to him, so we sat like that for a long time, looking over the ocean. After a while a flock of cormorants came gliding over the water, and we watched them pass. It was magical.
The video was directed by my friend Cody, who is an awesome musician himself. We spent a lot of time throwing around ideas together, and I love the way the video came out. It was Cody’s idea to shoot at a very high speed and then slow it down so it looks like everything is in slow motion. This meant that I had to sing the song 4 times faster than the normal speed, which was very difficult! I had to practice for weeks to get it right. Also, of course, when my band was off camera they were laughing at me because I looked ridiculous singing that fast, so trying not to laugh was probably the hardest part.”
Backed by Christopher Cox (bass), Gina Dvorak (banjo, guitar), Karla Manzur (keys), Matthew Shepherd (percussion), and Lindsey Verrill (cello), Falconberry continues to work with the same cast of musicians she assembled prior to Leelanau. After four years of collaboration, the band has developed a close friendship that transfers to all aspects of their sound. The band’s increasingly integral role in the project prompted Falconberry to adopt the moniker “Dana Falconberry & Medicine Bow” for the first time.
Concerts in Europe to support ‘From the Forest Came the Fire’ are planned.
