Watch the new video from Melbourne-based Folk-pop chanteuse Esther Holt. Seaside, the second song on which she has collaborated with Lawrence Greenwood (Whitley), is taken from her 2015 ‘Cat & Mouse’ EP, it’s a stunning heartfelt tale where Esther paints an escape to a slow and sleepy day by the coast. There, a journey between two lovers takes place, they guide each other with love and intuition as they take their hand, take their time and reassess in 20 years time.
The video was made by filmmaker David Ward who shared this about the film:
“I find Esther’s music to be deceptively subversive and deep, and when I first heard ‘Seaside’, I had a very immediate, very visceral reaction to it. In spite of its really easy-going, quintessentially folk vibe and instrumentation, I got a very strong sense of melancholy from it, and when we did eventually go deeper into the lyrics, that real sense of longing and yearning became even clearer to me. What emerged on the other side was essentially the story of two damaged friends, or lovers, trying desperately to reconnect with one another, in spite of great pain. In other words: against all odds, reaching out to one another for help, for comfort.
Myself and the brilliant cinematographer Thomas Hayes – who I’ve now been working with for about five years – had been looking for an opportunity to work with puppetry on film for quite some time, and as the concept grew and developed, it began to emerge as the perfect opportunity to use puppetry very heavily, and have it be totally justified – thematically and narratively – within the confines of the clip. It also meant that we were able to collaborate with incomparable puppeteers and puppet
makers, who really are the stars of this clip”
