Back in June 2014, reviewing a gig by The Will Pound Band at The Square Tower in Portsmouth, I remarked “I’ve yet to meet an artist who hasn’t been blown away by the experience of playing there”. Well, it seems the venue’s reputation is spreading forever wider for promoter Ken Brown has announced that bluegrass maestros, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers have chosen the Tower for their first ever UK appearance. They’ll stop off to give just the one UK performance when they come to Europe in May. Joe, in his roles both as musician and radio presenter has received a clutch of awards over the years from the International Bluegrass Music Association and the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America whilst the band has become a regular guest at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville since its first appearance there in 2013. They’ll be playing The Square Tower on Thursday May 19th.
Following close on from this special evening, The Square Tower team have arranged for Sunday June 5th to be a charity day in aid of the, predominantly, children’s cancer charity, HistioUK (www.histiouk.org). A mix of local acts and nationally renowned guests are giving their services for free, as is the venue, so all money raised will go straight to the charity. The free entry afternoon concert will be headlined by TradArrr vocalists Marion Fleetwood and Gregg Cave, now touring as Fleetwood Cave. In the evening, a ticketed event will feature leading UK Americana bands Porchlight Smoker and The Jigantics.
