Our Song of the Day is a premiere from two sisters – Holly and Coco Chant, better known as Xylaroo. Their cover of Arctic Monkeys’ I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor features on the B-Side of their new Sunshine single which is out on March 25th via Sunday Best/ PIAS.
Thanks to their father being a civil engineer the sisters have moved around a lot. Holly was born in Papua New Guinea, Coco in Hong Kong. Home has also been the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and Maidstone, Kent where they first began gigging. The press release reveals that their global travels has had a marked influence on their music, none more so than island life in Sri Lanka ‘that added a rustic, vibrant flavour to their matter-of-fact, earthen songs. People would sing a lot in their village with guitars.’
Whilst their influences are wide ranging, it is alternative folk band Rilo Kiley, and specifically front-woman Jenny Lewis that they agree on as having provided them both with their musical epiphanies. The storytelling aspect of her songs being a major draw that’s reflected in their own music such as the new ‘Sunshine’ single.
Xylaroo may well be a new name to many but the duo’s new album ‘Sweetooth’, due for release on 3rd June 2016 via Sunday Best, is sure to change all that.
