Our Song of the Day comes from folk-pop troubadour Charles Latham who we last featured in 2013 when he recorded a great session for us (you can listen to his Folk Radio UK Session here). He recently released a full-band version of The Living Wage, which is also the launch of a fundraising effort in support of income equality!
All sales from the digital release will benefit The Scottish Living Wage Campaign, along with its “sister” organization, The Durham Living Wage Project in Latham’s hometown in North Carolina.

This musical fundraising project was conceived by Latham, who previously released the song as a solo acoustic rendition on his 2012 LP “Fast Loans”. While touring with Edinburgh’s Withered Hand in Scotland and England in support of the album, Latham says he was struck by audience reaction to the song: “I remember being emphatically told that it was an ‘anthem’, particularly in Scotland”, Latham says. “I hope that’s true, and as the chaos of the election cycle grows louder here in the States, it felt like the right time to try to make a statement.”
Latham first learned about the Scottish Living Wage Campaign while researching the efforts of the Poverty Alliance in the UK, and following the launch of the Durham Living Wage Project in March 2015, he saw an opportunity to lend his support to both his local community and his “home across the Atlantic” through music.
Latham chose the Scottish Living Wage Campaign and Durham Living Wage Project as beneficiaries of this project not only because of his personal connection to both places, but to emphasize that this is a global movement fighting for decent wages to enable workers to live a decent life. This creative fundraising effort has encouraged the two organizations to collaborate. Both the Durham Living Wage Project and the Scottish Living Wage Campaign feel that the sentiment in Latham’s song is universal and will hopefully strike a chord with supporters.
