Our Song of the Day is Sufi Song from the experimental group Yorkston/Thorne/Khan which features James Yorkston, a name that will be familiar to many of you that follow and listen to Folk Radio UK – although this setting will be new to most, incorporating folk music, Indian classical and indie music. Joining him is Suhail Yusuf Khan, award winning sarangi player and classical singer from New Delhi (who also toured as a duo with Dan Walsh) and Jon Thorne, best known as jazz double bass player with electro outfit Lamb.
The track is taken from their new album Everything Sacred which is to be released on 15 January 2016 via Domino Records and to be followed by a UK Tour (see dates below). Talking about the collaboration James said:
“Playing together as Yorkston / Thorne / Khan, we tackle a wide array of different sounds and songs. Alongside pieces of our own, there’s a fair chunk of improvisation, plus cover’s of Ivor Cutler’s ‘Little Black Buzzer‘ and Lal Waterson’s ‘Song for Thirza‘. Jon’s jazz back-ground definitely comes to the fore, as does Suhail’s devotional singing and outstanding sarangi playing. I Just do my best to keep up…”
We’ll be bringing you more on this release soon.
