The first time I heard Somewhere Along the Road was more than likely on the Silly Sisters album No More To The Dance (1988 Topic Records). The last time was this week, at a sold-out show at the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton, when Steeleye Span came back on stage for their final encore and sung it a cappella. Those wonderful harmonies will take some beating and it was definitely one of the many highlights of the evening. The good news is that the song appears as a previously unreleased track on their new album The Essential Steeleye Span – Catch Up, one that gathers together the finest moments of the band’s twenty year (and counting) relationship with Park Records. They also recently released a new video for it which you can watch below – and it’s our Song of the Day. This album version features the violin playing of Jesse May Smart.
“a song of the natural desire and search for sanctuary and a kindred spirit, ‘Somewhere Along the Road’ seems to reflect our human needs in these unsettled times more than ever” Rick Kemp, Steeleye Span
