Having recently featured Scottish folk singer, songwriter and harpist Josie Duncan as a Song of the Day with The Mary Jane I couldn’t resist sharing this new recording of the folk ballad False Lover. Josie is joined by Luc McNally on Guitar and button box and Gregor Kincaid on Bodhran.
Like many traditional songs from the world of folk music there are many versions of this song. The lyrics for the version above were identical to those used on The Witches of Elswick (which included Fay Hield in their line-up) on Honey for the Bee, from their 2003 album Out of Bed (Fellside). According to the liner notes they learnt it from Malinky “who fused traditional words with a Highland pipe tune called Mairi’s Dream.”
