Alasdair Roberts has just unveiled a new song, Rocking the Cradle, from his forthcoming self-released limited edition 12″ vinyl release Missed Flights and Fist Fights with Brad Gallagher and Warren William Lowman (also featuring Matt McGinn).
In January 2015, Chicago-based musicians Brad Gallagher and Aluminium Group member Bill Lowman (who also play together under the name Bosco and Jorge) attepted to fly to Dublin to join Glasgow-based musician and Drag City recording artist Alasdair Roberts for a recording session at Analogue Catalogue studio in County Down, Ireland. However, the Chicago winter weather thwarted them; their plane left without them. Fortunately, they were able to reschedule and they joined Alasdair a day late.
After a night off and a whisky or two, the trio, acclaimed engineer Julie McLarnon and special guest musician Matt McGinn set about filling the fresh County Down air with a ramshackle and spontaneous collection of songs and tunes – a few traditional Irish songs (of course!), some Scottish songs (including one from the late, great Perthshire Traveller singer Sheila Stewart) and a couple of American ones (including “Goin’ Back”, written by Bill’s grandfather, Bill “Smilin’ Willie C” Connor).
Featuring eight tracks, all lovingly recorded entirely to 24-track 2-inch tape (with not a computer in sight), Missed Flights and Fist Fights boasts a line-up of synth, keyboards, heavy fuzz guitar, psychedelic jew’s harp, throat singing, accordion, ‘cello, drums, guitar and voice; it is available from September 2015 in a self-released limited edition of 500 12” vinyl discs.
Details on how to purchase a copy will follow soon on Alasdair’s website: www.alasdairroberts.com
