The Tinder Box are a core trio that hail from Sioux Falls in south-eastern South Dakota. I stumbled across them in early 2013 after the release of their second EP Who’s To Till This Land? (introduction here), prior to which they released their debut EP These Winds (2011).
They describe their sound as a uniquely cohesive blend of Folk, Blues, & Bluegrass. They have a distinctive southern gothic sound which reminds me of the early sound of The Cave Singers (there are vocal similarities here as well) and the slower burning songs of 16 Horsepower and Califone.
They have been developing their sound over the few years they’ve been together and this is most noticeable on their new album, The Neener Circle Sessions. Take a listen to Two Bloody Feet which has a greater depth and breadth of sound on offer:
