We have a special track premiere and Song of the Day from Iain Morrison who hails from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Iain is by no means a new name on Folk Radio UK as his music has featured in our playlists and we reviewed his last album, To the Horizon, Sir, which we also selected as one of our Best Albums of 2013. Having said that, there’s plenty to discover prior to then as this is his sixth studio album.
This new offering in the form of Eas is something very magical, a musical journey inspired by the world of solo piping. Gaelic for ‘cascading waterfall’, each track on ‘Eas’ is based on ‘piobaireachd’, the classical music of the highland bagpipes – and which his father, Ian Snr, is a world leader of. Piobaireachd, also known as ‘Ceol Mor’ (The Big Music), would have been usually taught using a 44 technique called ‘canntaireachd’, which is a form of singing used to communicate the subtleties & nuances a lot easier than an instrument. This is music that will cut you adrift from this world. Have a listen to the title track below:
Eas is out on July 31st via Peat Fire Records with a vinyl release due in mid August.
