Sadie Jemmett may be an unfamiliar name to you as yet, but the singer-songwriter has already found her way to a sizeable audience, but just not in the way you might expect. Sure, she has done her share of gigging around the circuit in the UK and recently played a great set to an attentive crowd at London’s Water Rats, but it’s through the play Shakespeare’s Sister, which features several of her songs performed live on stage that her main exposure has come about. The play opened in New York five years ago and was seen by Lou Reed, who made a point of seeking Sadie out after the show to praise her songs. More recently Shakespeare’s Sister has completed a successful month-long residency at The French National Theatre in Nice and will now move to Paris and tour the rest of France after that.
More importantly Sadie has also managed to fit in some recording and has her second album, London Love Songs, all but ready to go. There is a Pledge Music campaign launched to see it over the line and you can hear the title track here.
Sadie was also fortunate enough to start the album at a legendary London studio as she explains, “The sessions in Abbey Road came about through a friend. I had just two hours to record 5 tracks on just guitar and vocals, these tracks were then picked up and engineered and produced by John McBurnie (who has worked with Elton John, The Hollies and Yes) at his studio in Kent and the rest on the album was recorded there too. There was huge input from Lawrie wright on Keyboards who I was introduced to through John and the whole thing really took off from there.”
There a great combination of classic sounds and tones mixed into the recording and Sadie has called this a really easy song to write, admitting, “It’s a real London love song and a bittersweet mix of different relationships that I’ve had, so has a special place in my heart.”
We think it’s a bit of a gem and will bring you more on the album in due course. Meanwhile there are plenty of pledge options that are yours for the taking.
