Our Song of the Day is Stay On My Shore by Joan Shelly. The song features on her forthcoming album Over And Even (September 4th via No Quarter) which was written last winter on a Greek island. When asked by Catherine Irwin of Freakwater about the album for the press release Joan told her “The whole thing had something to do with Vashti Bunyan”. Catherine thinks the inspiration maybe lies elsewhere as “Joan Shelley is a poet, so she makes things up….maybe the Greek deal was really about Leonard Cohen”. Whatever the drive for this album there is no denying the beauty of her voice on ‘Stay On My Shore‘ and as an introduction to her new album I’m eager to hear the rest.
Most of the tracks were recorded live to tape, just Shelley and guitarist Nathan Salsburg in a room, while other Kentucky friends (Glen Dentinger, Rachel Grimes, Will Oldham and Dan Dorff) came by to help out.
