Our Song of the Day is from the bagpipe-driven Scott Wood Band who made a big impression at Celtic Connections Festival Club. Their debut album is due to hit the stores in August 2015 and they are also playing the Skerryvore | Decade concert on the 30/05/15, Mossfield Stadium, Oban. That will be a big party!
The current band arose out of the Scott Wood Trio, who were nominated for ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards in 2013. They went on to perform across the UK and Europe building a solid reputation and they include in their highlights of that time the Tiree Music Festival of 2013 who declared them “The most exciting new traditional act in Scotland.” Our reviewer Johnny covered the festival that year (read the review) and was impressed by how they filled the main stage with a sound that was ‘impressively varied, slow and lyrical with whistle or fiddle to the fore, or full on piping pieces’.
What was a trio has developed into five players now and they pack an impressive punch. They made it to the 2014 MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards at which they were nominated as Folk Band of the Year. Despite the title going to Julie Fowlis it was a great achievement and the MG Alba Awards are very special…you come away on a cloud – Something I can talk from experience on as Folk Radio UK were flying high on the night also having made it to the finals, something I still smile about. It was a great party!
The Scott Wood Band are definitely going places so make sure you follow them, social links are below. But before that here is our Song of the Day, Sheep Running About, which was composed by the late Martyn Bennett.
