Sidmouth FolkWeek (31st July – 7th Aug) is fast approaching and the Early Bird deadline for best value All-in-One, Week, Weekend and Day Tickets is midnight on 30th April.
As with every year they have a great line up this year, some of the highlights are outlined below:
Kicking things off are Port Isaac’s choral collective Fisherman’s Friends (pre-festival concert on Friday 31st July at 3.15pm) who’s new album ‘Proper Job’ is due for release on 15th July. Festival Patrons Show Of Hands rub shoulders with Celtic giants like Irish trad. stars Altan and Skye’s party starters Peatbog Faeries. Powerhouse voices such as the Blue Mountains’ Spooky Men’s Chorale and The Poozies rouse the spirit. Roots party activists Edward II fill the dancefloor with their reggae and Brit roots whilst The Demon Barbers XL present a showstopping Disco At The Tavern (read our review). Spectacular dance displays show rich and diverse styles, from the dazzling Tashi Lhunpo Tibetan Monks to the unique homegrown traditions of Lancashire of Britannia Coconut Dancers of Bacup. And that’s just scratching the surface…
Also joining the lineup is some of this years BBC Folk Award Winners: ‘Folk Singer of the Year’ Nancy Kerr, performing with The Sweet Visitor Band, the multi-talented ‘Musician of the Year’ Sam Sweeney, performing with Leveret, and two sparkling stars of the singing world, who performed at the recent award ceremony, the Gaelic sensation Julie Fowlis and Barnsley nightingale Kate Rusby (who appears at a pre-festival concert on Thursday 30th July).
The festival celebrates the very best across a variety of music, dance and song forms in a range of venues across the town – including the streets and seafront, which come alive with festive atmosphere. There are fantastic concerts, ceilidh dances; a re-invigorated folk dance programme with dance masters such as Tom Hinds from the US and Gerard Butler from Ireland. With an ear to the past, eye on the future, Sidmouth are looking forward to showcasing some exciting emerging new acts in their Folk Rising and Cellarful of Folkadelia concerts with Stick In The Wheel, Lynched and more. There’s a superb Children’s Festival, storytelling, Shooting Roots youth sessions, traditional music sessions, and the widest range of workshops for beginners and experts alike.
All are welcome! There’s something for all ages and all interests.
