In 2012 Lau hosted their very first Lau-Land event at Kings Place, London. An opportunity for the contemporary trio to present groups and individuals that have inspire them and excite them artistically. Each subsequent new Lau-Land announcement has generated excitement as they take their progressive skills into the field of curation making the festival an institution in its own right.
At the Sage Gateshead British Folk stalwarts mingled with the likes of Fred Frith and Michael Chapman and at Edinburgh (read our live review) Joan as Policewoman shared the stage with Dick Gaughan, Capercaille, Adam Holmes and more.
From Fri 29 – Sun 31 May 2015 Lau-Land comes to Bristol’s Colston Hall in the South West, home to a thriving music scene which has a fascinating underground music culture from folk through to acid jazz, dub reggae, neo-psychedelia and trip-hop. In terms of line-up for Bristol they are featuring their greatest breadth of music so far from San Franciscan folk-rockers to roots music pioneers. Expect exhilarating collaborations and a freewheeling mood as artists like Omar Souleyman, Tinariwen, Sun Kil Moon and Plaid create an intoxicating atmosphere at this inimitable festival.

Tinariawen, Omar Souleyman and Lau

The festival kicks into full swing on the Saturday with the world famous Touareg collective Tinariwen, the legendary Omar Souleyman who has been updating his native land’s traditional dabke dance music since 1996, Cassette enthusiast Brian Shimkovitz who runs Awesome Tapes From Africa who went from blogger to running his own label and DJ’ing around the world….and not forgetting your hosts – LAU.

Spiro and Rayna Gellert
Sun 31 May 2015 – The Lantern
The contemporary acoustic ensemble now known as Spiro first came together through Bristol’s folk sessions scene in 1993, back then calling themselves The Famous Five. They join Rayna Gellert, a traditional fiddle player from Indiana in the USA, who specializes in rural stringband music, heartfelt gospel songs and old ballads.
