Our Song of the Day is from a local artist (to us in Somerset) called Kitty MacFarlane who was one of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Semi Finalists this year. This is a wonderful cover of Tim Buckley’s Song to the Siren, a song he first released on his 1970 album Starsailor although he wasn’t the first to release it. More on that in a moment.
You can hear Kitty again at our next Levels Collective Evening, this Friday 27 March, when she is supporting Alasdair Roberts. You only need to listen to her perform Song To The Siren below to appreciate why we’re so pleased to have her performing on the night. I think you’ll agree that she’s a name more people should know of.
It was Pat Boone who first released Song To The Siren on his 1969 album Departure. Tim wrote the song with his writing partner Larry Beckett in 1967 but was unhappy with recording attempts. An earlier version did eventually surface on Morning Glory: The Tim Buckley Anthology which was a recording of a more folkie performance on The Monkees TV show from 1968.
