Emily Smith is recently back from a New Zealand tour, also homeland of fiddle player, guitarist and husband Jamie McClennan. Together they performed six shows in six weeks which is a leisurely pace for these two. Mind you, looking ahead it’s probably the only respite they’ll have for a while as they gear up for a very busy tour schedule and new collaborative projects.
Things get off to a flying start from today as they are now in Germany for a mini tour with five shows mainly in the north of the country. A longer tour German tour is planned for 2016.
A Fine Wee Lass?
Then on 29th April Emily is involved in a new collaborative project called A Fine Wee Lass?
Bringing together a host of experience in traditional Scots song and contemporary songwriting, Mairi Campbell, Kim Edgar and Emily Smith examine the presentation and voice of women in Scots song.
Expect discussions and unique musical performances of work songs, lullabies, murder ballads, with some cross dressing and the supernatural thrown in for good measure!
This is part of Edinburgh’s ‘Tradfest’ and the show is on 29th April (details and ticket links).
Folk of the Pennines
Emily has also been invited to sing one of the classic Border Ballads ‘The Dowie Dens of Yarrow’ for a programme which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May called ‘Folk of the Pennines’. Also appearing in the series are fellow folksingers Kate Rusby and Bella Hardy.
