After our tribute to 1970s German experimental band Can earlier today I wanted to feature something that was worthy in experimental comparison and then this popped up…perfect.
So, our Song of the Day comes from Bristol formed band Zun Zun Egui via their new video for African Tree which features on their second album Shackles’ Gift. Their music is so filled with influences, resemblances bubble and fade throughout from loosely structured marching drum reminiscent of the fife and drum blues of the American south…I even heard Talking Heads. No surprise when you consider their influences range across tropicalia, punk funk, Afrobeat, Ethio jazz and no wave.
Of the video, singer/guitarist Kushal Gaya says: “The video was made by a film-maker called Alden Volney who is based in Paris. We really liked his idea for the video, which suggested almost rotoscopic techniques combined with 60’s french psychedelic animations which reminded us of ‘Fantastic Planet’ and stuff like that. We feel those visual aspects work really well with African Tree, we see it as a pretty colourful tune.”
Zun Zun Egui kick off on an extensive UK tour in March. You know they are going to be great so try and catch one:
