It was nearly 18 years ago now that the Ry Cooder produced and Grammy winning Buena Vista Social Club album was released. It created a global sensation making them one of the most famous world music acts. We were then able to place faces to names when an equally enthralling feature film was shown in ’98, directed by Wim Wenders who accompanied Ry Cooder back to Cuba.
That album lay the path for more recordings to follow including the solo releases from singers like Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo as well as virtuoso pianist Rubén González and bassist Cachaíto López. The original sessions recorded in Havana by Ry Cooder and Nick Gold took place over a magical seven days in 1996 at which musicians from Cuba’s 1950’s golden musical era worked their magic together once again.
For those that loved that album you’ll be pleased to hear that there is more to come with a new album featuring a collection of previously unreleased tracks. Some of the tracks were recorded at the time of the original sessions and during the busy and fruitful period that followed into the early 2000s.
“Over the years we were often asked what unreleased material was left in the vaults,” says World Circuit’s Nick Gold. “We knew of some gems, favourites amongst the musicians, but we were always too busy working on the next project to go back and see what else we had. When we eventually found the time, we were astonished at how much wonderful music there was.”
All the studio tracks were recorded for World Circuit at the Egrem studio in Havana.
