We have a special offer for FRUK readers to see Jim Boyes & Belinda O’Hooley performing <em>Sensations of a Wound at the Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall on Tuesday 17 February 2015. The offer is for the best available seats for just £7.50.
Sensations of a Wound is an original and moving story of a Yorkshire soldier caught up in the enormity of the First War. Told through Jim’s Boyes’ newly written and traditional songs and Belinda O’Hooley’s subtle, innovative piano accompaniments.
Many of you will know of Jim Boyes as a member of Coope Boyes and Simpson whose album In Flanders Fields was one of our featured albums of the month. He was also a founding member of Swan Arcade, performed in folk supergroup Blue Murder and been involved in on-going musical collaborations with War Horse author, Michael Morpurgo. On this solo album Jim tells a little-known story of the First World War through the eyes of his grandfather, Robert “Croppie” Boyes.
“We knew he had been wounded, but my grandfather, Robert “Croppie” Boyes, never talked about his army service – we heard nothing about it.” But Jim’s discovery of a long-lost account Croppie had written after the War changed all that – and sparked a unique and moving album and a series of performances.
Joining him is pianist and singer songwriter Belinda O’Hooley, best known for being one half of groundbreaking folk duo O’Hooley & Tidow who were our Artists of the Month in February last year when they released The Hum, selected as one of MOJO Magazine’s Folk Albums of the Year.
Her inimitable, innovative piano playing has accompanied such luminaries as Nic Jones, Jackie Oates and Rachel and Becky Unthank.
Bringing together Croppie Boyes’ first-hand accounts, Jim Boyes’ original songs and Belinda O’Hooley’s subtle piano accompaniments, Sensations of a Wound tells the story through songs, music and narration of a young soldier who travelled far from his home.
Jim Boyes and Belinda O’Hooley will be on tour from 11th February across the UK. You can buy the album here:
