Maybe this will be the year of artists returning to their roots, as Sufjan Stevens returns to his folk roots on his latest release so Sam Beam of Iron and Wine has deleved into his early catalogue with the first in a series of previously unreleased songs through his own label Black Cricket Recording Co. Many were recorded whilst he was working on his debut release The Creek Drank The Cradle (2002).
According to an interview with Billboard he also revealed some collaborations were on the way with a record of covers with Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses as well as an album of duets with Jesca Hoop.
In an accompanying promotional video for Archive Series Volume No. 1 (see below) which is released this month on 24th February he revealed that these early recordings were from a period when he was making music more as a hobby. The video also features the story behind a unique venue at which he also performed a number of the songs for the first time.
Jerry Run Summer Theater in Cleveland, WV was built over a 6-7 year period by music lover Dusty Anderson. Despite being out in the middle of no-where there is now a musical community based around the venue. The building is quite an achievement and you can see why it’s the perfect venue for performing these songs at, as Sam says “dreamers and makers are my favourite people, so it was kinship”.
