As many of you may recall in celebration of our 10th Anniversary last year we launched The Levels Collective – a regular music night ran in partnership with Bridgwater Arts Centre in Somerset.
Like our website and radio station we aim to bring a broad range of music showcasing emerged, emerging, traditional, contemporary, roots, world, Americana, with a twist of the psychedelic from time to time. We are back this month on Friday 27th 2015 with another great double bill of entertainment from The Hand (Rachael Dadd & Will Newsome) alongside Sitar & Tabla duo Jon Sterckx (Tabla) & Ricky Romain (Sitar).
RACHAEL DADD & WILL NEWSOME (The Hand)
Many of you will know Rachael Dadd as a solo artist whose latest album We Resonate has been chosen as an Album of the Year on FRUK. It was a good few years ago now that I first received a demo CD from Rachael with a little note inside saying “hello Alex, here’s my demo, plus 2 other bands I play in – The Hand & Wooden Bridge”.
That was my first introduction to both Rachael’s own music and that of The Hand, featuring Will Newsome – a singer-songwriter, and kora player as well as other stringed instruments. What I heard was some of the most beautiful music ever, quite unlike anything else and like a number of key players from around this period went on to shape Folk Radio UK’s future.
This is a really special gig in which they are re-united again as The Hand, it promises to be very special as they share their own songs as well as those they penned whilst working together on Bristol’s ferryboats.

RICKY ROMAIN AND JON STERCKX – SITAR AND TABLA DUO
Jon Sterckx (Tabla) & Ricky Romain (Sitar) have been regularly performing Indian music together since 2001 and have developed a strong performance rapport between them.
Their shared understanding and appreciation of North Indian music is always apparent within their performances, as is their mutual enjoyment of each others playing, and of the music being created through their combined playing. Through the sound world of North Indian Rag and Taal, Ricky & Jon’s highly engaging and dynamic performances range from slow, meditative, melodies through to fast and highly detailed exciting rhythmical interplay.
