For those unfamiliar with White Fence, it’s the work of American songwriter Tim Presley who originally played guitar in hard core punk band The Nerve Agents after whose demise he founded Darker My Love in 2004. It was whilst still in Darker My Love that he began recording lo-fi recordings in his own apartment releasing his self-titled White Fence album in 2010.
Further releases as White Fence followed on Woodsist Records which included a limited edition cassette release as well as a collaboration with Ty Segall.
Presley also founded Birth Records, a move that was inspired by San Francisco-based folk singer Jessica Pratt. The label was set up solely to release her music. Talking of discovering her music he states “Jessica Pratt’s music feels like I have found a lost LP of an old forgotten mystical folk singer, that feeling of discovering a record all by myself: Without the help of friends or the Internet. Like Stevie Nicks singing over David Crosby demos, with the intimacy of a Sibylle Baier. I am in love with it. So much, that I saved up and threw all my money to get it into this world. I actually care about it, no matter which way the winds blow”.
Both White Fence and Jessica Pratt are now signed to Drag City (as is Ty Segall) and last year he released For the Recently Found Innocent, on which he dropped his home-recording approach and headed for the studio. Jessica Pratt releases On Your Own Love Again this month from which we recently featured Back, Baby as Song of the Day.
White Fence is to head out on tour which includes dates in Europe and the UK (dates below) and to mark the occasion he filmed a live set “Live at the Moonlight Motel” which includes performances of Sandra from his latest album, Beat and Make Them Dinner at Our Shoes, both from Cyclops Reap (2013).
