Our Song of the Day comes from a one off collaboration between the Derbyshire Dales trio Haiku Salut and Bristol electronica collective Jilk. ‘Periscopes’ will be released as a single on Monday February 9th, listen to it below:
Haiku Salut first met Jilk when they both appeared at Bristol’s Grain Barge in September 2013. Bonding over the incongruity of playing spellbinding instrumental music in a floating venue, and discovering a shared love for idiosyncratic songtitles (Haiku Salut’s “Sounds Like There’s A Pacman Crunching Away At Your Heart” seemed to go nicely with Jilk’s “My Techno Heart Melts Your Emo Dribble”), a friendship was formed, and it wasn’t long before talk turned to a possible collaboration.
The starting point for the collaboration, it was decided, would be “Six Impossible Things” by Haiku Salut, which appears on their widely-praised 2013 debut album, “Tricolore”. But after months of reinvention and fresh inspiration, a completely new track grew out of the seeds of this old song. Titled “Periscopes”, that new song marries cloudbursting post rock and intricate electronica with a very British strain of psychedelia, creating a melody that’s both pastoral and peculiar, borne of the countryside and the skies above.
The accompanying video for “Periscopes” was directed by the filmmaker James Sampson. Having won an award at the Edinburgh Cinefringe Festival for his short film drama, “Best Man”, and had his latest film, “Conversations With Strangers”, selected for the London Short Film Festival, Sampson brings a cinematic vision to the video, which mirrors the music in a suitably magical fashion.
Haiku Salut are currently putting the finishing touches to their second album, which will be released in the spring. Jilk release a new EP later in the year.
