We have a song premiere today from progressive acoustic singer-songwriter Nick Harris. Calm Your Demons is taken from his second album ‘The Tall Trees’ which was produced by Nick Trepka (Speech Debelle, Kieran Leonard, Emmy the Great). It features a wealth of instruments that been used to brilliant creative effect giving Nick’s music a greater sonic depth and emotion. This can be heard clearly during the middle-eight of Calm Your Demons where over-dubbed chanting vocals and a cacophony of strings introduce chaos to the calm building with intense haunting effect before the demons are calmed once more.
Talking about his new album Nick says “This album quickly became a very different animal to the first. We became obsessed with capturing the right atmosphere and finding the boundry between rich accompaniment and a sparse, intimate feel. We made a decision early on to record this entirely at night, often in long sessions lasting 14 hours or more, ending in a wonderful madness and exhaustion. I couldn’t be happier with what we came out with”.
Having left his job and moved to New Zealand to live a frugal and solitary life that back to basics move seems to have paid dividends ten times over judging by the very clear creative spark on this new album. The artist has clearly reached a creative high which may never have happened without that lifestyle change. You can all enjoy a lot more when his album is released on 23rd February 2015 via Shifted Fiction Records.
