This is a session I recorded at this year’s Purbeck Folk Festival. His name is Tom McQ (Tom McHugh) and we caught him one night performing at the Duck Shed which is an open mic stage which had heaps of great talent this year. He made a big impression but I didn’t get a chance to talk to him afterwards so this meant I spent a lot of the following day trying to track him down. By sundown we’d caught up and he was very up for recording a session.
We found a nearby field and we just sat there and recorded this great session. The crows were returning to the trees and by the time we’d finished the session we had the crickets for company. We chatted a lot and I came away from that session with a big grin on my face, it was one of the many highlights of that festival. Tom is a very down to earth bloke and he had many sayings which he used, one of which was “boats in a harbour look nice but that’s not what they’re made for”. Hopefully he’s been setting sail and performing more since this recording was made. He’s not that visible on the internet so if you love this then go and drop him some words of encouragement here: www.facebook.com/tommcqmusic/ / www.facebook.com/tom.mcq.5
