As previously mentioned on Folk Radio UK Jamie Doe AKA The Magic Lantern recently released his new album ‘Love Of Too Much Living’. We’ll be bringing you more on the album very soon but in the meantime we wanted to share this lovely new video which takes a quick look into the life and times of Jamie Doe (AKA The Magic Lantern) a folk and sea shanty singer songwriter based in London.
The video, like Jamie’s music has been beautifully made, it was directed by Tom McCagherty who alongside editor Leanne Pletersky and a greast camera team (all four of them) have created a captivating glimpse into Jamie’s life.
There are some lovely little highlights which catch the eye, from his little collections on shelves (100 Danish Poems), playing the African mbira and the sudden appearance of a beard (he promised not to shave until he finished this album). While sitting at his table writing with a vintage camera close by and busy shelves in the back-drop – he could easily pass for a crew-member on-board Shackleton’s Endurance – if it wasn’t for the one modern appliance on the table… a perfect look for a shantyman.
Director: Tom McCagherty
Camera: Tom Bryan, Andy Mitchell, Sam Louka, Joe Gubb
Editor: Leanne Pletersky
I’ve met Jamie a number of times over of the years in Somerset, normally in the company of Sam Brookes who together with Pete Truin make up the shanty men ‘The Ballina Whalers’. His passion for his music is very strong and whilst we may use that term very loosely when discussing the creative spirit of an artist I do believe Jamie takes it to another level. He’s great company and an exceptional singer so make sure you try and catch him on his latest tour (dates below), I promise you that you’ll have a great time.
