In April this year we chose Lotte Mullan’s I Hope It Breaks Your Heart as our Song of the Day. The track, which we hosted on our Soundcloud, went on to clock up a staggering 77,000 plays rocketing to the top of Soundclouds Country Explore chart.
The good news is she’s back with her new single ‘Bad For Me’ the video for which, as you will see, borrows a leaf from Bob Dylan. Watch it below:
We asked Lotte about the song and video. “It’s taken from my Nashville sessions with Band of Horses and the full length album will be released early next year. It continues with the theme of romantic masochism explored on the last single ‘I Hope It Breaks Your Heart’ but is as much about addiction as it is about love…the shadow side of love is the best way I can describe it. The sound is Country Noir and more on the mechanical side than most of my recordings…I wanted the hypnotic drums and intense atmospheric sounds to reflect a feeling of insanity…wild thoughts repeating on themselves. There’s a heavy nod to Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ in the video as well as a rather large dose of jilted Bride Miss Haversham craziness (I am in fact wearing my wedding dress!).”
The British music press raved about Lotte Mullan’s self released debut album, christening her Indie-Country sound ‘Anglicana’. Dubbed as the female Bob Dylan, Lotte has built a dedicated following with her intimate story telling songs; she spent two years on the road touring solo before packing her bags and heading to Nashville to make an album with country rockers Band Of Horses. The first single ‘I Hope It Breaks Your Heart’ immediately trended on Folk Radio’s Soundcloud, hitting over 70k streams and was played on BBC Radio 2 and 6 music.
Fiercely DIY, Mullan turned down a major label deal with Warners and runs her own label Raindog Records. A blog she was writing about her misadventures in the music business was snapped up for a book and film deal by Elton John’s Rocket Pictures and Ridley Scott Productions used four of Lotte’s songs to soundtrack their latest short film ‘Kismet Diner’ which has had over 3 million hits on Youtube and won first prize at Manhattan Short film festival.
Lotte is touring with trail blazing folk group The Moulettes this autumn and will release her much anticipated second album early next year.
