We’ve a video premiere today from Blind Willies, I Need A Woman is taken from their latest album ‘Every Day Is Judgment Day‘, their frontman Alexei Wajchman had this to say to us about the song:
I Need A Woman was inspired in part by Fellini’s autobiographical film, Amarcord. It’s set in a small Italian seaside town during Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship. The family goes on an annual summer picnic and takes along Uncle Tito who’s been released from the local asylum for the day. Tito wanders away and climbs to the top of a tree where he howls “I want a woman!” and throws apples and rocks at everyone trying to coax him down. A doctor and a dwarf nun are summoned. The doctor tells the family “He has normal days, and he has not normal days, just like us.” Another influence was Van Gogh, the loneliness he often expressed in his letters, his unrequited loves, and the legendary incident when he sliced his ear and allegedly offered it to a prostitute, soon after which he entered the asylum at Saint-Rémy. There are so many threads and influences in any song. These are two I was conscious of. And one more: “If I had a hammer, I’d kill every singer . . .” was a nod of admiration and respect(in my own fashion) to Pete Seeger’s eternal optimism.
