As I mentioned recently during the course of Purbeck Folk Festival we recorded a number of live sessions, some with well known artists such as Vena Portae and some with new names that very few of you will have heard of.
Katy Hooper falls into the latter category. I’d actually met her a few years before at Cropredy and heard her singing as I was walking across the site one night. Luckily she was also at Purbeck Folk Festival…later that day we found a lovely spot in the woods in which to record some sessions with our good friend John Gray, a Producer/Director at BaylisGray.
The following session is Katy Hooper performing Travelling Beauty, she had this to say about the track:
This is my latest song and one I’m enjoying playing around with. The tune was inspired by Ry Cooder – I love the movement in his songs and I guess I was trying to create the same travelling feel in this song. The lyrics are a celebration and a mourning. Sadness in lost times/missed opportunities that never quite worked out, but rejoicing in seeing that same person inspiring people with their art and charisma and just being aware of the strength they have to ignite a certain feeling. I’m looking forward to seeing how it might sound once I’ve found some musicians to add some other instruments to it.
