Lucy Ward performed Lion, a new WW1 themed song commissioned by Billy Bragg for 14-18 Now, for the first time on the Leftfield Stage at Glastonbury 2014. The song relates to the true story of Rifleman Robert Loveless Barker who was summarily executed ‘shot at dawn’ in November 1916 for cowardice. It’s our Song of the Day to mark ‘Lights Out’ which you are all invited to take part in this evening (details below).
Robert Barker was one of 306 servicemen to face a similar fate and he is commemorated along with the others at The National Memorial Museum (Alrewas).
TODAY – MONDAY 4 AUGUST, EVERYONE IN THE UK IS INVITED TO TURN THEIR LIGHTS OUT FROM 10PM-11PM LEAVING ON A SINGLE LIGHT OR CANDLE TO MARK THE MOMENT THE UK ENTERED THE FIRST WORLD WAR, ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO.
