Our Song of the Day comes in the form a video première from alt-folk American/German accordionist Anja McCloskey. Henry Lives is her new single taken from her brand new album, the enigmatically titled ‘Quincy Who Waits’ – Out Now on Sotones Records. Henry Lives is the only track on the album not to feature Anja’s trademark accordion but is no less richer for its absence.
The opening wooden clacking percussion gives the track an a soft and comforting feel underpinned by a restful melody played out on acoustic guitars, double bass, violin and bass clarinet. Anja’s wistful vocals accentuate the dream-like feel of the track which is played out in Brook Morgan’s animation on an island jungle where the only company is that of the animal world. According to the press release the song was originally written over six years ago for Anja’s folk-rock band Haunted Stereo but was never released.
“We played it live as Haunted Stereo, but never recorded it and I’ve always thought that was a shame’ says Anja. “It’s a lovely little tune full of positivity and devotion, whilst having an unattainable element to it. I recorded it live in Hamburg and it features an old friend of mine, Michael Eggert, on drums. It was really lovely to be able to record this tune in Germany and with people I hold dear. I think that transpires on the track.”
We think it was worth the wait…
Also on the track: Joseph Kelly (Etao Shin) on double bass and acoustic guitar, Andy Harris (Haunted Stereo, Calico Cat) on electric guitar, Hollie Chapman on violin and Emma Gatrill (Mariner’s Children) on bass clarinet. And don’t miss the unrecognisable B-side, a remix from Sotones Label mate rude_nhs.
