It was back in 2011 that we reviewed what was then a new project from Tandy frontman Mike Ferrio called Good Luck Mountain. The good news is he’s back this summer with a new single ‘Apollo’, to be followed by the album ‘Too’ in September. Listen to the single below:
Mike has built up quite a formidable band in the form of bassist Jason Mercer (Ron Sexsmith, Ani DiFranco), drummer Konrad Meissner (Brandi Carlile, Silos), violinist Eleanor Whitmore (Steve Earle, The Mastersons), guitarist Chris Masterson (Steve Earle, The Mastersons), Ana Egge, Matt Mays, Malcolm Holcombe and pianist Tony Luria.
Musically, fans of the likes of Califone, REM, Van Morrison’s ‘Astral Weeks’ and Talk Talk will find plenty to love here, with this collection of songs being another large step for Ferrio as he continues to cement his reputation as one of the great American songwriters of our generation.
On the inspiration behind writing ‘Apollo’ Ferrio explains….
“I remember seeing the images from the Apollo 11 mission in National Geographic magazine – pictures of the lunar landscape and the iconic shot of Earth “rising” from behind the Moon. The magazine said that because, unlike Earth, the Moon is solid, it made a kind of deep ringing sound when the Lunar Expedition Module dropped it’s landing gear when leaving the Moon’s surface. That picture of our tiny blue planet and the thought of that sound still fascinate me. That’s really why the song happened.”
Already receiving rave reviews from critics and peers alike, legendary troubadour Steve Earle is an early and longtime Ferrio supporter and Jim White continues to spread the word about his love for Mike and his music.
‘Apollo’ single released digitally on all download sites on 14th July, followed by the album ‘Too’ released on CD / Download on 15th September both via At The Helm Records.
