Listen to the latest project from Aidan O’Rourke which was written as a soundtrack for Dalziel and Scullion’s multi-screen film installation Tumadh: Immersion.
This is the first of two works which explore ideas of urbanization, In a world where for the first time in human history, more than half the global population live in towns and cities, Dalziel + Scullion look to a colony of seabirds where in excess of 170,000 birds converge to breed and rear their young each year. Here cacophonies of guttural accents accompany territorial squabbles, coquettish preening, stolid incubation and frenzied feeding: exuberant yet highly evolved lifestyles that have adapted to harsh and testing conditions.
The intension of this music is to immerse the listener in the chaotic and dense environment of the sea-cliff. Not a beautiful isolated island but an overpopulated colony, like a urban tower block. There are argueing, dancing, love-making, swaggering, eating, tip-toeing, sleeping, defecting, laughing birds everywhere.
