Today you can hear Bellowhead’s cover of Richard and Linda Thompson’s ‘I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight‘ (via Deezer) which was originally released on Island in 1974. Inspiration for the cover came whilst sitting in Island Records boardroom:
‘I’d done half an arrangement anyway,’ said vocalist Jon Boden, ‘Then we’re sitting in the Island boardroom and there is a reproduction of the Bright Lights single cover on the wall and it just felt like the perfect choice’.
As already mentioned on Folk Radio UK the album will be released on Island’s Pink label, renowned in the 1970’s for acts such as Fairport Convention, John Martyn and Nick Drake. ‘You look at the history of Island, such a cool brand and reputation across folk and then Bob Marley onto U2 and recently the Mumfords, it’s perfect for us’.
When asked what their favourite Island Records releases were the band chose these:
Andy Mellon – Georgie Fame / Georgie Fame
Benji Kirkpatrick – The Meters / Cissy Strut (Island reissue)
Brendan Kelly – Jimmy Cliff/ The Harder They Come Soundtrack
Ed Neuhauser – U2 / Achtung Baby
John Spiers – Kid Creole and the Coconuts / Tropical Gangsters
Jon Boden – Tom Waits / Swordfishtrombones
Justin Thurgur – Bob Marley / Rebel Music
Paul Sartin – Fairport Convention / Liege & Lief
Pete Flood – Jimmy Cliff/ The Harder They Come Soundtrack
Rachael McShane – Nick Drake / Five Leaves Left
Sam Sweeney – John Martyn / Bless The Weather
We’ll have more on the album soon but in case you missed it make sure you read our in-depth interview with band member Pete Flood here.
