Whilst some of you may have heard of Sarah Jane Scouten she is best known on the North American and Canadian music scene but that will hopefully all change soon as she hits these shores later this month.
She Hails from an an island in British Columbia measuring 6km by 12km called Bowen Island. According to her biography it was here at the age of 12 that she began playing guitar and it wasn’t long before she was also taking part in all-night kitchen jams. Her melodies will certainly prove popular with those of you that love Folk Radio UK but it’s her lyrics that seem to attract the most comments.
Her lyrics are described as candid, poignant and flirtatious but it was C.R. Avery who maybe best summed them up:
I like her songs, each one has a great line or two that jump out and slap you in the face. She can do funny and she can do sad, there’s just something special in her stanzas that are better than most. Picture a feisty 12 year old Tom boy in a dress gripping a sling shot.
Here she is putting that into practice with Palm of My Hand which even includes a line mentioning Dylan Thomas and ‘Under Milk Wood’ followed by Til the Wheels Come Off.
