Emily Smith is celebrating her tenth anniversary as a folksinger with the release of retrospective album Ten Years which features tracks from previous albums as well as new recordings of old favourites.
Emily’s last album Echoes was released in February this year which Folk Radio UK featured as an album of the month. Simon couldn’t have offered more praise in his review when he stated “Emily Smith is simply one of the best singers out there at the moment, in fact, at least to these ears, one of the best singers full stop.” Read the review here.
Time has a strange way of playing tricks on you, it doesn’t feel like it was that long ago that Emily was named BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year. Yes that really was in 2002. Following on from this she won the USA Songwriting Competition in 2005, Scots Singer of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2008, and she received two nominations in the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Emily is a well established figurehead on the Scottish music scene and is up there with the best as she demonstrated when touring as part of the Transatlantic Sessions alongside Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eric Bibb and Teddy Thompson – adding to an impressive list of onstage collaborators which also includes Richard Thompson, Eddi Reader and Beth Nielson Chapman.
Emily has a number of live dates coming including ‘Footprints’ which runs from 23-25 June: a collaboration between Emily Smith, musician and partner Jamie McClennan and the dancers of High Heart Dance Company. Using new and existing music by Emily and Jamie, the artists link traditional music and contemporary movement to explore and celebrate the songs, music and rhythms that have journeyed into today’s culture.
Further live dates are listed below but first, here’s Emily’s official video for My Darling Boy from her last album ‘Echoes’.
