Breabach returned recently from a five week adventure down-under which saw them touring Australia and New Zealand and taking part in the Boomerang Project with Maori and Aboriginal musicians – Bagpipes meet taonga puoro and didgeridoo. The project premiered at WOMAD New Zealand festival in Taranaki. The Boomerang Project was then performed at Homeground Festival at the Sydney Opera House. Now back in the UK the performance can be seen again at Heb Celt Festival, in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, and finally returning to Glasgow for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in July. Here’s the promo video:
They have plenty of tour dates through this month and then on into the Summer Folk Festival season. Then later in September through to mid-October they head off on tour with the Maeve McKinnon Band as part of the 7th Scottish Colours Tour. But before those all important dates here’s our Song of the Day, this is Bha Mise Raoir an Airigh from their new album Ùrlar:
Megan first heard a version of this song sung by Kathleen MacInnes and, whilst in Lewis during our home community tour, met with Mairi Smith who gave us an alternative variation. This is our take on a song about a young girl sitting on the sheiling, thinking about her loved one who has left her. She is obviously a tough cookie as later in the song she physically fights off another man whom she recognises is not her lover.
