Our Song of the Day is from Brighton based artist Jinnwoo. On ‘Solo Man’ (released digitally on 28th April) Jinnwoo’s ardent vocals convey a modern-day high-lonesomeness, a voice that contrasts well against the sombre vocals of Alasdair Roberts who guests on this track which was also produced by Gerry Diver. This may come as surprise to hear two of folk music’s high-flyers involved with a largely unknown artist but Jinnwoo has been building up a deservedly solid reputation which has led to other high profile collaborations.
He began by sending bedroom demos to the artists and producers he most admired and they were all struck by his output. I’m sure after you hear the ‘Solo Man’ you’ll appreciate why.
As a totally unknown artist and on the strength of his material alone, they all replied: Caroline Weeks, Malcolm Middleton, Alasdair Roberts, Rachael Dadd, Gerry Diver,Welkie, Young Montana? (remixer for Lanterns On The Lake, WU LYF, Ital Tek) and Noah Georgeson (producer/mixer for Joanna Newsom, The Strokes, Devendra Banhart). All wanted to work with this quiet man with the loudest talent, clearly producing a strain of folk music that wasn’t going with any grain.
A support slot with Kyla La Grange led to another collaborative partner – she appears on his material, and he on hers – and Jinnwoo’s stripped-back and wholly arresting live performances have been delivered in support of some wonderful artists, such as Alt-J, Lucy Rose and Ghostpoet.
Jinnwoo will be performing at The Latest Bar on Thursday 8th May as part of The Alternative Escape.
‘Solo Man’ is taken from Jinnwoo’s debut EP, set for release in Summer 2014.
