It’s that time of year again and Folk Radio UK are very pleased to be sponsoring Halsway Manor’s ‘Hothouse Festival’ once again, an acoustic folk-roots festival for the next generation. Showcasing the finest young talent on the UK scene as well as names from the South West where Halsway Manor and Folk Radio UK are based.
This year’s line-up is looking great, with a return from BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Winners Moore Moss Rutter who are also performing the night before at the nearby Pebble’s Cider Bar in Watchet. Also returning are the Priddy based duo The Drystones as well as Sam Brookes who was our Artist of the Month for March. Sam’s also appearing in his shanty guise as The Ballina Whalers alongside Pete Truin, Jamie Doe as they prepare to haul on the bowline.
There is a nice mix of music with newcomers in the form The Jaywalkers (BBC Young Folk Award finalists 2009), Kate Wighton: one of Australia’s rising stars, Jen Ord, Rosalie Bevan and Jess McAllister.
There’s also a Rapper side – Silver Flame Rapper is a female dance team from all over the UK.They perform rapper sword dances – a style which originated in the coal mines of the North East – with their own distinct stamp, wearing short skirts and Doc Marten boots, and creating their own dances too. In 2010 they came 1st in their category at the Dance England Rapper Tournament, securing their reputation as one of the best young teams in the UK.
Silent Disco: Folk Radio UK -v- Will Lang
I’ll be DJ’ing alongside Will Lang again this year in the late night silent disco which I’m really looking forward to after last year’s experience which included some interesting dances from some of the last men standing. I still have the video but have sworn never to show it :)
Here’s a small taster of what’s on offer:
