On Wednesday 7 May the BBC Concert Orchestra are working with two great folk groups – A Hawk and A Hacksaw and Firefly Burning – for an evening of folk-inspired music at Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.
James Redwood and his folk collective Firefly Burning will arrange a brand new folk song using a selection of lyrics sent to #bbccofolksong (detaile below). The finished song will be performed on Wednesday 7 May between 6.15pm-7pm during a pre-concert gig with the band at The Front Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, ahead of Edge of Sound: BBC Concert Orchestra with A Hawk and A Hacksaw at the Queen Elizabeth Hall later the same evening.

Concert Information
Immerse yourself in the folk cultures of Eastern Europe. Explore the gritty, rustic and evocative music of the original folk collector Béla Bartók in Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. We evoke the spirit of Romania in Ligeti’s full-blooded Concert românesc.
Discover A Hawk and A Hacksaw. An American duo, with cimbalom maestro Balázs Unger as special guest, they seek to create and document an ecstatic sound much like the village bands of old where the communal aspect of folk tradition is the key factor. They will weave their music into Bartók’s Three Village Scenes.
Experience something new when BBC Concert Orchestra and A Hawk and A Hacksaw come together to perform a brand new piece written specially for their combined forces in a unique collaboration.
6.15pm-7pm: free pre-concert gig in The Front Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, with East London minimalist chamber folk collective Firefly Burning
