This month sees the release of the first tribute album to Jackson Browne, this may come as a surprise to many as the American singer-songwriter has been on the scene since the 1970’s and has also been a very visible political and environmental activist. The album features 23 cover tracks from his prestigious music career from his 1972 eponymous debut through to his more politically and socially-oriented ’96 release Looking East.
Whilst the commercial success of his albums have varied it has left him no shortage of admirers as demonstrated on this tribute which includes covers by artists such as Ben Harper, Don Henley with Blind Pilot and Lyle Lovett to Keb’ Mo’, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen & Patti Scialfa, and Lucinda Williams.
The album was conceived by Kelcy Warren who is also head of theTexas-based label Music Road who are releasing the tribute. There is also some Texas bias present in the form of a fine array of Lone Star artists including Eliza Gilkyson, Bob Schneider, J.D. Souther, Kevin Welch, Shawn Colvin, and Jimmy LaFave.
Here’s a small taster with Lyle Lovett performing Rosie which featured on Browne’s ’77 album Running on Empty, an album that did very well reaching #3 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in 1978 and stayed on the charts for 65 weeks.
