Now and again I’m going to share a small bundle of sounds with you that have caught my ear recently or I’ve been drawn back to…so some new and some old. It will also allow me to feature some that will otherwise get swept along and missed by the wave of submissions we get.
Christoph Bruhn
So, kicking things off is this lovely piece of American Primitivism from Christoph Bruhn. The track Arabian Writing On Plaster Walls features on his album Weekends on the Frontier which will be issued on Grass-Tops Recording on 10 May 2014:
Jospeh Arthur
Jospeh Arthur gives us a first taste of his new trbiute album ‘Lou’ with his first single, a great mellow cover of Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side . Single is out May 13th, 2014. The album Lou is set for release on May 13th, and marks Arthur’s first record for Vanguard Records.
Timber Timbre
Timber Timbre give a further taster of their new album “Hot Dreams”, released on Full Time Hobby in the UK on 31st March 2014. Curtains!?…something very Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds about this one…
Myriam Gendron
Solace is a gorgeous track by Myriam Gendron, it features on Not So Deep as a Well. The reaction of the label manager to this unsolicited album submission sums it up:
It’s not too often that I’ve been blindsided by an artist. In nearly three years of running Mama Bird, no album that’s been sent to me unsolicited has floored me so unexpectedly. Myriam Gendron’s ‘Not So Deep as a Well’ is a stunning piece of work. It’s strange, mysterious, heartbreaking, and deeply clever. Myriam’s composition and performance of Dorothy Parker’s poetry is a revelation that truly brings out all of Parker’s power as a writer – the wit, the bite, and all the lonesome heartache becomes so heavy and so clear.
Avi Jacob
Amongst the many submissions we’ve receive Avi Jacob caught my ear recently. He’s a folksinger from Boston city, currently living between Boston & Charleston, South Carolina. His latest release So Hard to Reach You has been getting re-played a lot recently and whilst his biography may be short on detail his home-grown sound more than makes up for any shortfall.
Plinth
For the final track, this is from the re-issue of Wintersongs by Plinth which I now have on vinyl and a great thing of beauty it is too. There will be more on this release soon but I wanted to end this little bundle of sounds with the wonderful ‘Bracken‘.
I’m going to leave it there for now…but I’ll have a small heap of sounds for you again soon.
